Look not mournfully into the Past. It comes not back again. Wisely improve the Present. It is thine. Go forth to meet the shadowy Future, without fear, and with a manly heart.
(Henry Wadsworth Longfellow)

The future you shall know when it has come; before then, forget it.

Men spend their lives in anticipations, in determining to be vastly happy at some period or another, when they have time. But the present time has one advantage over every other: it is our time.
(Charles Caleb Colton)

Experience is a costly school, yet some learn no other way.
(Benjamin Franklin)

"A lot of people ask, Jet, what's your favourite movie? Favourite actor, favourite director, favourite food? Favourite everything. But in Eastern philosophy, we don't belive you have a favourite. Because the favourite always changes - you grow up, your situation changes. Every moment you change yourself. So I always say about something I like it, but not that it's my favourite: I will change, I know. Like at the moment I love one woman the best; two years later, who knows? ...So listen, I believe, no favourite"

'Loneliness is the human condition. Cultivate it. The way it tunnels into you allows your soul room to grow. Never expect to outgrow loneliness. Never hope to find people who will understand you, someone to fill that space. And intelligent, sensitive person is the exception, the very great exception. If you expect to find people who will understand you, you will grow murderous with disappointment. The best you'll ever do is to understand yourself, know what it is that you want, and not let the cattle stand in your way.'

You're walking. And you don't always realize it,
but you're always falling.
With each step, you fall forward slightly.
And then catch yourself from falling.
Over and over, you're falling.
And then catching yourself from falling.
And this is how you can be walking and falling
at the same time.

This is the end passage of "The Third and Final Continent," a story by Jhumpa Lahiri in her Pulitzer Prize-winning collection Interpreter of Maladies:

"In my son's eyes I see the ambition that had first hurled me across the world. In a few years he will graduate and pave his way, alone and unprotected. But I remind myself that he has a father who is still living, a mother who is happy and strong. Whenever he is discouraged, I tell him that if I can survive on three continents, then there is no obstacle he cannot conquer. While the astronauts, heroes forever, spent mere hours on the moon, I have remained in this new world for nearly thirty years. I know that my acheivement is quite ordinary. I am not the only man to seek his fortune far from home, and certainly I am not the first. Still, there are times I am bewildered by each mile I have traveled, each meal I have eaten, each person I have known, each room in which I have slept. As ordinary as it all appears, there are times when it is beyond my imagination."

I love those last two lines so much. I felt compelled to share this.

Love is patient; love is kind and envies no one. Love is never boastful, nor conceited, nor rude; never selfish, nor quick tp take offense. There is nothing love cannot face; there is no limit to its faith, its hope, and endurance. In a word, there are three things that last forever: faith, hope, and love; but the greatest of them all is love.
